Chapter 6

Oscar

We were so busy and Cormac had to take the whole week off, so we were running short-staffed, too. The shop was a flurry of activity with nine new clients booked in before the end of the week. Maryanne, as senior, took six with Lizzie’s help, and I took the remaining three, representing Cormac. I sent him emails, texts and pictures of the meetings and each site. The first two were straightforward. A charming newlywed couple wanted their living and dining-rooms done. It was just a ‘decorating’ job. No walls to come down, no major construction, so I laid out their wants, discussed their budget and worked with what I could.

The second, was an office for a lawyer in town. He was a handsome silver daddy, very cute, very straight, but not narrow. His budget was considerable, so I sent the specs to Cormac. He loved those high-end clients.

The third job was different. A young man named Caleb Jaspers. He was a flight attendant for a local airline and called Atlanta home and hub. He wanted a complete gut of his condo’s kitchen. Not a huge space, but he hated everything about it. He had gotten the condo at a steal. The property was a foreclosure and he purchased it for next to nothing. While most of it was in good shape, the kitchen suffered from a serious case of the nineteen eighties. We sat down for the preliminaries. It had been an enjoyable afternoon.

“So, given your budget, custom cabinets are out of the question.” I needed to let him down easy. I wanted to work with him, so I had some other options for him. His face fell a touch. He had a ten grand budget and a wish list longer than my arm.

“Dang,” he complained. “I can’t go above ten. It’s my max.”

“Don’t worry. I have a suggestion. How about Ikea cabinets and counters?”

He tossed me a skeptical glance and I hurriedly assured him it was a good option.

“I know people think Ikea is I-Crappa but you can get a great kitchen, which we can customize and, because we go through them direct, the counters come at a cheaper rate. As for the appliances, I have a dealer that works in the scratch and dent. We can get all your appliances for half the cost of new.” I pulled up the dealer and he peered at it dubiously.

“Are they good quality?”

I shot him a smug grin. “They sure are. All my appliances come from them. We use them a lot. It saves thousands and makes our customers very happy. The money they save can go on extras like a custom back splash, new high-end floors and things like wine fridges and espresso makers.” That perked him up a bit.

“So I can get all the stuff I want?” He looked at me with really cute, blue eyes, brushing at the mop of blond hair that kept falling into his face. He was adorable and I was not interested at all.
